The Great Buddha (Daibutsu)

Kamakura Daibutsu Den Kotoku-in.  The temple has a great statue of Buddha, which we usually called “The Great Buddha” in Kamakura.

 

This is the “Nio-mon” gate, where two “Nio” statues are housed on the right and left sides. They are guardians, who drive enemies away from the temple.

The statue on the right side is called “Agyo.” He opens his mouth, clearly expressing anger.

The statue on the left side is called “Ungyo.” He closes his mouth, internalizing his anger.

Going through the gate, there are many trees.  Among the trees, some tress were planted by royal family members from various countries.

In the back garden, the Great Buddha is set against the background of  mountains.  How big he is!

The height is 13.35 m (or 18.3 m including the pedestal); the weight is 121 tons (or 250 tons including the pedestal).

We entered his body through an inlet port at the side.
